The major focus of my current research project in the SLCU is on understanding how cells respond to stress. In particular we are interested in single cell stress response behaviour within complex multicellular structures such as biofilms. Previous observations show that cells might exploit stochastic noise in genes expression as a stress response strategy. Here we are exploring physiological roles of stochasticity in much more complex multicellular communities such as gram positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis biofilms. To address these questions we use confocal microscopy of biofilm samples, time-lapse fluorescent microscopy, as well as computational approaches for images quantification and mathematical modelling of cellular physiological processes.
