Research Group Leaders

Applications are invited for Research Group Leader positions in the Sainsbury Laboratory.

The Sainsbury Laboratory is a new Research Institute located in central Cambridge, providing an outstanding scientific environment. It has excellent resources and core facilities, with state-of-the-art equipment including growth rooms, glasshouses, microscopy and computing facilities. It provides a collaborative research atmosphere where Group Leaders can take risks in a supportive environment. We are seeking to appoint Group Leaders who can both contribute to and benefit from this environment. In particular we are looking for scientists with imaginative research ideas that will contribute to our understanding of plant development by elucidating the links between genotype and phenotype in any appropriate study system.

Applicants will typically have experience of relevance to the overall scientific focus of the Laboratory, in particular plant development and/or computational modelling of development. Applicants should have exceptional promise for, or a proven record of research achievement in the field, and provide strong evidence of their potential to make significant contributions to basic plant science research.

The positions are open to applicants of any nationality and will be awarded across a broad range of seniority. Applicants who currently hold a permanent post in a University or other Research Organisation are welcome to apply. The successful applicants will initially receive support for five years, including salary and benefits. The annual pensionable salary of a Group Leader is on a scale from £37,382 to £101,863, depending on experience, plus a 30% Gatsby distinction award. Ample laboratory space, administrative support, and unrestricted research funds in the range of £250,000 per annum will be available. Group leaders are also eligible to apply for competitive research grant support from other sources. Pending a rigorous peer-review process, appointment is renewable in 5 years installments. There is no overall limit to the number of potential renewals.

Applications can be submitted electronically at any time as pdf files and include a full CV, a research proposal for the initial five year period as Group Leader and the names of at least three referees. Completed applications should be sent by e-mail to:

There is no fixed closing date- applications will be assessed continuously throughout the year.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 5 years in the first instance.
