I studied in Rome where I obtained my Masters degree in physics and a PhD in mathematics. After a long period spent working in quantitative finance, I am now back into science after discovering the beauty of biology and in particular plant biology.
I am interested in measuring and modelling physical properties and processes in the developing plant. Thanks to a University of Cambridge/ Wellcome Trust Senior Internship for Interdisciplinary Research I am now studying circumnutation (the movements plants make while growing), using photogrammetry and time-lapse to describe the phenomenon in 4D. Using techniques borrowed from differential geometry, morphoelasticity theory and systems biology, I hope to build a model that links the mechanical aspects of circumnutation to the fundamental biological processes that regulate plant growth.
