Sainsbury Laboratory

As Facilities Supervisor, Paul Carman supports the Facilities Manager in the management of all plant and facilities within the Sainsbury Laboratory. The Sainsbury Laboratory is a dedicated modern science research laboratory with extensive centrally managed mechanical, security, electrical, ventilation and heating/cooling systems, together with specialist scientific facilities incorporating plant growth facilities, freezers, tissue culture rooms, microscopy and scientific equipment rooms, controlled environment spaces, laboratory spaces and extensive office and communal areas.

Paul coordinates planned maintenance, repairs and installation services to plant and equipment, asset management, managing contractors, coordinating maintenance works and supervising three staff members

His role also includes planning and co-ordinating building and refurbishment projects and determining technical specifications of required work, cost control, progress and final operational testing and certification of all contractors’ works. He is responsible for breakdown and preventive maintenance programmes, for the diagnosis and repairs to specialist mechanical and electrical engineering plant and equipment, dealing with new situations as they arise. Paul oversee the issue of permits to work, for all maintenance work; (electrical, hot works and general maintenance), provides building technical services and guidance to specialist contractors and liaises with staff on all planned maintenance.
